About Surface Air Supplied Diving

Hookah diving or surface supplied diving has been around for hundreds of years in various shapes and forms and used for sponge collection, abalone diving, lobster hunting, cultured pearl farming, aquatic farming, recreational diving without scuba tanks, tourist holiday activity, boat hull inspection and cleaning, swimming pool maintenance, treasure hunting and underwater metal prospecting.

With so many applications dive hookah systems are designed to be practical in as many applications as possible.
So when you are looking to buy dive hookah equipment, you should consider how you wish to use your hookah. Some points to help you choose which hookah equipment is best to buy are:
  • -using the dive hookah for commercial or recreational diving
  • -use your dive hookah in shallow water down to 10 meters or deeper water over 10 meters
  • -how long you will be underwater with your hookah dive system before recharging the battery or filling gasoline hookah system
  • -size and weight of the dive hookah equipment for transporting and storage. Do you want a deck mounted hookah system or a floating hookah system
  • -how much does the hookah dive system cost?
  • -do you need a hookah system for 1 person or 2 people (or more)

Hookah systems come in the following categories

Mini Floating 12 volt battery powered pump (listed by performance ranking)
  • PORTAHOOKAH single diver 7.4 Kg and runs for up to 4+ hours. Dive to 10 meters.
  • PORTAHOOKAH double diver 8.5 Kg runs for up to 4 hours. Dive to 7 meters.
  • Airbuddy single diver 11.6 Kg runs for up to 45 minutes to 12 meters.
  • Airbuddy double diver 11.6+ Kg runs for up to 45 minutes to 6 meters.
  • Blue3 Nemo single diver to 3 meters.

SASUBA ( Surface Air Supplied Underwater Breathing Apparatus) is in a category of its own. Surely the most reliable hookah gear as it is a float for a scuba tank with one or two breathing hoses with standard dive regulators. This is the ideal system for those with access to scuba tank refills.

Dive hookah systems have many useful applications both for pleasure and practical purposes.

Safety

All water activity has some risk of injury or even death and diving with surface supplied air has risks.
These risks are limited as the equipment is limited to more shallow dives of less than 10 meters, has attachment to the surface float and has much less cumbersome equipment to wear and to operate.
There remains risks of serious injury from rapid accent, holding the breath while ascending, panic from loss of air or marine hazards.
To allay these risks we strongly urge all users of any diving hookah gear to complete a relevant course with a registered dive school, practice in a pool or controlled environment, be appropriately physically fit for the activity and become familiar with the dive equipment and dive with a buddy at all times.
SPARE AIR emergency supply is highly recommended: When diving at shallow depths eg. 1-5 meters, with training and experience, reaching the surface in emergency should be easily and safely achieved. At greater depths, for less experienced users could be difficult and panic may cause a dangerous rapid accent and possible holding of the breath. If suddenly out of air at these depths it takes control and time to reach the surface safely, so why not avoid this dangerous situation by having an air supply ready to use in seconds. This small investment could save your life if your hookah fails suddenly.
If the intended hookah use is at depths say, 6 or more meters, the best and safest practice is to carry a compact spare air supply to enable slow and controlled surfacing. These mini scuba tanks should not be used for any purpose other than emergency or practice for emergency and if ever used it should be refilled to capacity.
